FAQs

  • We generally separate cabin groups by age and gender. If your kids are close in age they may be in the same cabin unless you request otherwise. If your kids would be better off in separate cabins, as they might make more friends, or learn independence or autonomy, we will support that. As a matter of fact, that’s our preference! But we are happy to help campers feel more comfortable, especially if it’s their first time!

  • Most times this can be arranged. If campers’ ages are far apart it is harder to have them in the same cabin. You may make a request and we will try to accommodate as much as we can. We understand how wonderful being in a cabin with a friend is. Know that if we cannot get your child in the same cabin, almost all activities are multi-age and friends can spend almost the whole day together still!

  • Please let us know in your application that your child wets the bed, even if it is seldom. We will let their cabin counselor know to keep an eye out. Counselors are trained to be very discrete, working out a plan of action with campers. This can be a secret word or message, so the counselor will know to wash the sheets when no one else is around. If your child regularly wets the bed, please send them with pull-ups and the counselor will help dispose of them properly.

  • No, but you may call and talk to the Director about how they are doing. We find that talking to your child during the week increases the likelihood and severity of homesickness. If the Director doesn’t know exactly how your child is doing, they will check in with their counselors and get back to you.

  • The LGBTQ+ community is part of our camp. Your camper will easily find Allies on our staff. We know every person is an individual. Gender and identity are important aspects of growth and development. If you would like to talk about how to best integrate your camper, please call the Director directly. We welcome the alphabet here, y’all.

  • Generally this is not a problem at camp. We have family-style meals and campers get to pick and choose exactly how much food goes on their plate. We like kids to try everything but also don’t want them to dread coming to meals. If we feel your child isn’t eating enough, we will give you a call and ask for more direction, otherwise don’t worry. Most picky eaters will eat similar to snakes—when a good meal comes around, they are sure to fill up!

  • Generally we can handle just about any diet! We normally have family-style meals that are vegetarian/vegan based and people can add meat or dairy as they please. Occasionally we will have a food (say, like lasagna) that is easy to make for the separate dietary needs of camp, when this happens we just make sure everyone knows which dish is which when they eat.

  • Yes, this can happen. Sometimes the camper has been coming to Woodbrooke for years, and sometimes it’s their first time. The big transitions in the first few days can be very trying for campers, getting used to the food, their cabin-mates, schedule, and new rules can make them miss home all the more. In actuality, this is great! They are learning how to process this new place and reaching to you for comfort. Often by the time you’ve received the letter, your camper has adjusted well. But if you find the letters are still coming, please feel free to give the Director a call at 608-647-8703 and check in with what the staff is seeing from our standpoint. Rarely does a kid go home early because they just can’t make it, but we let you decide after we have collected all the information we can.
