Working at Camp Woodbrooke

Camp Woodbrooke's staff members live in a small, close-knit, diverse community where each person is valued and treated with dignity and respect.

They are expected to be enthusiastic about working with children, are committed to living simply in harmony with nature; they design creative activities that help children know and love the outdoors. Staff members work to foster cooperation, teambuilding, and a sense of community within the camp and serve as a role model to others.

Housing and meals are included for all positions. With the exception of the Kitchen Coordinator (who has the option of living on or off-site), these are residential positions.

Job Descriptions

  • Minimum age 18 and one year of college or comparable experience required. Junior Counselors, under the age of 18, are accepted on a case-by-case basis, often having been long-term campers and Helpers, and/or with the recommendation of someone close to Woodbrooke.

    Duties:

    • Design and lead a variety of activities for small groups of campers

    • Co-supervise a cabin group of up to six campers

    • Co-lead overnight campouts and cookouts with campers

    • $3,000/summer

    • Housing & meals included

    • June 8-August 6, ~8.5 weeks

  • Minimum age 18 (21 preferred) and one year of college or comparable experience required - must have love of and experience with cooking (preferably for groups of people) and strong organizational and leadership skills. Valid driver's license preferred.

    Our Kitchen Coordinator will be working in a brand new kitchen this year!

    Duties:

    • Coordinate preparation and cooking of meals for up to 70 people

    • Coordinate assistants helping with meal preparations and cleanup

    • Plan menus that can accommodate some special dietary needs (e.g. vegetarian), using fresh (from our garden) ingredients wherever possible

    • Order supplies and drive/pickup/shop for groceries as needed

    • Keep kitchen and pantry clean and well organized

    • Lead occasional food related activities for small groups of campers

    • $3,900/summer

    • Meals included, housing can be on or off-site

    • June 8-August 6, ~8.5 weeks

  • Minimum age 21. First aid/CPR and Lifeguarding certification required, Wilderness First Aid and valid driver's license preferred. Must have primitive camping, canoeing, and tripping (ideally backpacking and biking) experience and leadership experience with teenagers.

    Duties:

    • Supervise a group of up to ten campers ages 13-15

    • Implement the Teen Program collaboratively with one or two (depending on size of group) other teen trip leader

    • Maintain a primitive campsite on camp property that is used as the group's "home base"

    • Lead the group on biking or canoeing trips (depending on year), camping in rustic/primitive campsites

    • Implement a service project with the teen program group

    • Starting at $1,060 for 17 days/$2,120 for 34 days, and the potential for more depending on our need and your availability

    • ~June 20-July 6 & July 11-27, with possibility of time worked with Young Campers between trips.

  • Minimum age approximately 25, with some exceptions considered, the Assistant Camp Director, working closely with the Camp Director, holds the following partial list of qualifications (please ask for full list when you apply):

    • A belief in, and adherence to the values and philosophies of Camp Woodbrooke

    • A genuine interest in and acceptance of all people, and the ability to live and work with children and adults of all races, religions, nationalities, and backgrounds

    • Love of and experience leading children, and working with teenagers

    • Experience supervising the work of others

    • Experience in program planning and implementation

    • Successful previous camp employment in a leadership position

    • Creativity in dealing with people, programs, services, and resources

    • Strong organizational and time-management skills

    • Ability to control emotions and put the needs of others before one’s own

    • Commitment to and experience with positive, proactive behavior management methods and peaceful conflict resolution methods

    • Empathize with, console, counsel, constructively confront, and resolve conflicts between campers, staff, and parents

    • Commitment to safety and experience with maintaining health and safety procedures

    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

    • Ability to use a computer for word processing, email, some camp social media, and data management

    • Maturity and good judgment

    • Excellent physical and mental health, abundant energy, and a sense of humor and humility

    • Ability to tolerate heat and humidity.

    • Ability to walk the camp’s uneven and steep terrain, and climb stairs, on a daily basis.

    • Current certification in Standard First Aid, Child and Adult CPR by the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or the equivalent.

    • Familiarity and experience with Quaker values and/or in a Quaker camp, passing knowledge of ACA standards, and training or experience in leadership.

    • The ability to take direction and feedback with grace.

    • $4,500/summer

  • Camp Woodbrooke would be happy to coordinate with various college programs, to provide internship opportunities for students. College credit may be arranged.
